CHANDELURE was a project undertaken to practice and experiment with techniques used for Non-Photorealistic Rendering.
Chandelure, a character from the Pokémon franchise, was modelled, textured and rigged over the course of a few days.
I was inspired by the convincing ‘Fake 2D’ created by Arc System Works for use in their fighting game Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, a technique they briefly detailed in a Game Developers Conference Talk in March 2015.
For their models, details were directly modelled into the mesh, with the texture providing details with colour lookups and axis-aligned beams. This created a clean look that did not decrease in quality during close ups.
Chandelure is rigged with 30 joints and 7 Control Shapes and has 8726 tris. Dynamic Hair Joint Chains are used to create ‘springy’ arms.
